Opal Cliffs Auto Center was established in the early 1960's. The name derived from the Opal Cliffs area where there were actual opal mines in the cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean. Opal Cliffs Auto Center was originally a full service mobile gas station doing service and repair work. After the original owner retired in 1988, the new owner Kimm Hogue took over. Kimm has been a Santa Cruz resident since 1959 and started working at Opal Cliffs Auto Center in the summer of 1975. When he first started, his duties included pumping fuel and shop cleanup. Applying himself, he quickly developed mechanical skills and soon began his mechanical repair career. Learning the basics with proper schooling, he soon not only repaired vehicles, but also became the manager.
